Baraza Resort & Spa
Zanzibar
Tanzania
Overview
Baraza Resort & Spa is one of Zanzibar’s established luxury icons, situated along the beautiful south-east coast and distinguished by architecture inspired by the island’s Swahili, Arabic and Indian heritage. Rather than adopting a contemporary international aesthetic, Baraza celebrates Zanzibar’s history through dramatic arches, hand-carved details, ornate furnishings and interiors reminiscent of the era of the sultans.
The all-villa resort has 30 villas, ranging from spacious one-bedroom options to two-bedroom Sultan and garden villas and the impressive Royal Beach Villa. Even the one-bedroom villas are exceptionally generous, with separate living areas, dressing rooms, large bathrooms and outdoor spaces, while the largest accommodation extends beyond 250 square metres.
Baraza operates as a luxury all-inclusive resort, but the experience is far removed from conventional mass-market all-inclusive hospitality. Dining draws on Zanzibar’s position at the historic crossroads of Africa, Arabia, India and Persia. The Sultan’s Dining Room provides an atmospheric setting for dinner, while Livingstone Terrace, Ocean Lounge, Chai Lounge and Dhahabu Bar give guests a range of environments throughout the day.
Activities range from kitesurfing and sailing to dhow excursions and beach walks, while the resort’s wellness offering provides a quieter counterpoint to days spent on the Indian Ocean.
Baraza’s greatest appeal lies in its sense of place. Many luxury resorts could theoretically exist in any tropical destination; Baraza is unmistakably Zanzibari. The architecture, spices, design and culinary influences constantly reference the island’s heritage.
For travellers looking for a grander and more traditional interpretation of Zanzibar luxury, combined with substantial villas and the convenience of an inclusive experience, Baraza remains one of the island’s defining resorts.
